Knights cross grouping to Obergefreiter Johann Holstein, member of the Grenadier Regiment 698. Holstein born on 25.9.1913 in Ehrang and member of the Infanterie Regiment 698 as part of the larger 342. Infanterie-Division was first send to Servia and Croatia. In this area the Divison was occupied with heavy partisan warfare. Early 1942 the Division was send to Russia. Holstein soon knew to promote himself with the infantry assault badge (probably for Croatia) in silver and the Iron cross 2nd class. Holstein also got enjured on 8.8.1942 probably in the Rshew area were he was awarded with the wound badge in black. It was up to spring of 1944 that Holstein really popped up as a hero of the Regiment. Soon, one after an other Holstein was awarded with the EK1, the close combat clasp in  bronze and on 16.10.1944 the Knighst cross of the iron cross. According to the congratualations letter from the 56. Pz korps Holstein took command of the 2nd Kompanie of the GR698 and held back the Russian army during heavy fightings in the area of Dorohusk-Husynne, Poland just across the Ukrainien border. 

The group contains the Knights Cross of Holstein bein an early "micro 800" variant of Steinhauer & Lück. Knights Cross of the iron cross by Steinhauer & Lück, Lüdenscheid. Early so called "micro 800". Three piece constructed piece with silver "800" frame and iron magnetic core. Cross shows signs of age on the obverse.The cross comes with its original piece of KC ribbon. With the cross the award document of Holstein, congratulations letters of the command, telegram of General Graeser, commander of the 4. Pz Div. 

Bronze close combat clasp by C.E. Juncker with award document, silver close combat clasp with (post war) award document due to missing award document during the war. This silver clasp was onlu awarded in March 1945! Cased Iron cross 1st class by BH mayer with award document and iron cross 2nd class with award document. 

With the group a post war signed photo of Holstein, newpaper article etc. 

FANTASTIC knights cross group of a "Melder" from the Mosel area that only had the rank of Obergefreiter. The maturity, know-how and acts of bravery of Holstein must have had an enormous impact on the Regiment!
