Panzer assault badge in bronze grouping to Obergefreiter Walter Ludewig, member of the Schützen Regiment 12 as part of the 4. Panzer Division. After being part of the occupation forces on France, Ludewig saw his first action at the Eastern front. Staying in occupied Poland first, they formed the absolute spearhead for operation Barbarossa with successed in Minsk and Gomel. The battle hardened unit moved to Moscow but after some losses was forced to retreat. With the loss of several panzers a week the 4th Panzer Division became smaller and smaller and got stuck on the large Russiand land. They took part in the first failed battle of Kursk but also had to retreat again. Ludewig's health went down as the war progressed. He was diagnosed with heavy fever and returned home from the front. He was awarded with the Panzer assault badge in bronze and wound badge in black. Ludewig was not able to get back to the unit or front again, even worse, his health only got worse, upon his sudden death un July 1944.

The group contains the Wehrpass of Ludewig, well filled out, the panzer award document and several other documents. His death card and panzer badge in bronze. Panzer badge in bronze by O. Schickle. Very good condition with small signs of age.

Fantastic group of a front Panzer Grenadier unit member, who was indirectly killed by the cold warfare at the Eastern front.

This group was purchased directly from private and I decided not to split the badge with the group as they came like this.
