Hilfswillige were Eastern European volunteers (Russians, Ukrainians,...) that served in or for the German army. Many did this to escape the German POW camps or out of anti-communism. In 1944 600.000 of them served in the German ranks and could be found from the Atlantic to the Eastern Front and everything in between.
