Leon Degrelle was the leader of the Belgian political party Rex that was quite popular in Wallonia before the war. Rex immediately engaged in collaboration after the occupation of Belgium by Germany. In 1941 Degrelle enlisted in the German army as a private but soon became a lieutenant. In 1943 the Walloon Legion became part of the Waffen-SS division Wiking. Their most remarkable feat was the breaking of the encirclement of the pocket of Tcherkassy after which only 632 out of 2.000 men survived and Degrells was severely wounded. Degrelle became an Obersturmbannführer by the end of the war (according to some accounts even a Standartenführer) and received among other awards the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and the Oakleaves to the Knight's Cross. After the capitulation of Germany, he was able to escape to Spain in a Heinkel 111. He survived the crashlanding but had to remain hospitalized for months.
